Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar has escaped a bid on life after his car was fired at by an unidentified gun man when he was leaving his ashram on Sunday evening in Bangalore. Spiritual leader, who is also affectionately called ‘Gurudev’ by his followers, is unhurt.

A disciple was injured in the firing near Shankar’s Art of Living ashram at Kanakapura Road near Bangalore. He was returning after delivering  a discourse in Bangalore.

One of his devotees sustained a bullet injury on his thigh as he was grazed by it. He has been discharged by the Hospital after first aid.

It appears that the attacker had the knowledge of Gurudev’s movements that evening who fled the scene after the attack.

Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya confirmed that Ravi Shankar’s car had been fired at but refused to comment further. “I am waiting for more details. He is safe,” said Acharya about the spiritual leader.

Swami Sadyojatha, Director of International Affairs at the ashram, told media he was inside in the car when it was shot at but couldn’t comment who was to blame for the attack.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is the spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation. The NGO and its international counterpart, the International Association for Human Values – are involved in relief work and rural development across the globe.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is also a strong advocate of yoga as a tool to ward of stress and also solve societal problems and has also popularised Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas.

The Bangalore Police have not found any leads in the case yet and have said it is too early to comment on the attack. They said they are looking into all aspects of the incident.
They are yet to find a lead in the case and are looking for all possible angles in the matter.

The DGP has stated that the bullet had been fired from 700 feet or from a point further away.

“It is too premature to comment right away,” IGP Central Range, Kamal Panth said and added that a team of police and forensic experts are conducting examinations.

“There was no specific threat but Swamiji already has been provided security. We will examine all the witnesses who were there,” he said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ramanagaram district, Deveraj said “an unidentified person fired a round at the convoy.  The identity of the person is yet to be ascertained.”

The incident took place around 6.15 pm when Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘Satsang’. Thereafter he went ahead with his discourse even after the incident.

It is not understood why would any one try to take the life of Guruji, who has spread love, affection and smiles all over the world and has been guiding millions by his Art of Living Courses. This Course has benefitted people, not only in India, but all over the globe. By his teachings, he is showing people the path to live life to the fullest.

A day after Sri Sri Ravi Shankar escaped a bid on his life, the spiritual leader invited the unidentified attacker to the ashram and said if he spent some time with him he will be a changed man.

“I have no enemies and I have never used any kind of abuse in my entire life,” the guru told a media gathering in his ashram”. We must ensure the safety of the devotess and we must not be afraid of such attackers,” he added.

Police are still investigating with sniffer dogs and forensic experts scanning the spot. Security was beefed up in the area.

The 54-year-old guru took a truly spiritual response to his near-assassination. When asked by media what he wanted to say to his followers, Mr. Shankar said: “I’m completely safe. I’m fine, don’t worry, take this as a bad dream and move forward.”
