History was made at Lords by Kapil Dev and his men in 1983 and repeated after 28 years at  Wankhade Stadium, Mumbai on Apr 2nd 2011, by M.S.Dhoni and company. Kumar Sangakara won the toss at Wankhade and chose to bat Sunday in the final of the World Cup 2011 against India. In the end India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to clinch the coveted trophy.

It was the determined effort from Gautam Gambhir who scored 97 runs and a chanceless 91* from M.S.Dhoni which paved the way for India’s victory over Sri Lanka. This helped India overhaul the score of 274 set by Sri Lanka for India to win the title and it is the highest ever run chase in the World Cup final. 

For Sri Lanka Jayawardane scored 103* and Sangakara 48 runs.  (more…)

Sri Lanka beat India by 74 runs in the final of the Triangular Series between Sri Lanka, New Zealand and India played at the Dambulla Stadium on Saturday

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat.  They made full use of the track and Tilakratne Dilshan slammed a chanceless century to maintain the hold of Sri Lanka on the match.

Though embroiled in the no-ball controversy in depriving Sehwag of a century in the previous encounter with India, he had saved his best performance for the last.

He was ably supported by Mahila Jayawardne who rotated the strike very well. These two batsmen posted an opening wicket partnership of 121 runs. This was Dilshan’s third century against India. (more…)

A superb knock of 110 not out by Mahila Jayawardane saw Kings XI Punjab beat Kolkatta Knight Riders on Sunday. Jayawardane’s knock over-shadowed the knock of 88 runs scored by Chris Gayle earlier and beat the Kolkatta Knight Riders by 8 wickets.  Kolkatta Knight Riders, won the toss and chose to bat first against Kings XI Punjab at the Eden Gardens Kolkatta on Sunday. They opened the innings with Saurav Ganguly and Chris Gayle who made mince-meat of the Kings XI Punjab bowling.

Kolkatta Knight Riders were 100 in nine overs and Gayle started hitting more fluently thereafter. Gayle was initially batting slowly but played wonderfully well after the ten over mark. Gayle had milked Bopara for 33 runs in an over which is by far the most runs scored  in an over in the IPL. The opening partnership yielded 56 runs and it was then Ganguly got out  c & b Bopara for 36.  (more…)
