Mahela Jayawardene hit his first one-day century in two years as Sri Lanka thumped Pakistan by six wickets on Monday to grab a winning 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

The former captain made 123 and shared an opening stand of 202 with Upul Tharanga (76)  Sri Lanka cruised past Pakistan’s huge total of 288-8 in the 47th over. They won the match by six wickets.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field. first.  Put into bat, Pakistan made good use of the pitch and Kamran Akmal made 45 during a 71-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Younus Khan (44) after opener Nasir Jamshed  was caught by Samaraveera off Thusara for 1 run in the second over.

Pakistan suffered a middle-order slump when three wickets fell for 27 runs, before an aggressive Shahid Afridi helped Umar add 41 for the sixth wicket.

Afridi had smashed 32 with five boundaries when he was bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan. The off-spinner also bowled Umar soon thereafter.

Pakistan plundered 86 runs in the last 10 overs to compile the highest total  (288 for 8)  of the series.

Abdul Razzaq and Rana Naved led the lower-order charge, making 30 runs each,  hitting  boundaries and sixes. Razzaq slammed two sixes and a four, while Naved  hit two towering sixes.

Pakistan made 288 for 8  in the allotted 50 overs..

Jayawardene, opening the batting in place of unfit Sanath Jayasuriya, with Tharanga and gave Sri Lanka the perfect start.

Jayawardene hit 14 boundaries and a six in his 11th one-day century. Left-handed Tharanga slammed nine fours.

Sri Lanka lost a third wicket in the space of 10 runs as Thilan Samaraweera gave Saeed Ajmal a return catch, but Thilina Kandamby (32) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (37 not out) steered Sri Lanka home.

Sri Lanka made 289 for 4 in 46.3 overs and won the match with three and a half overs to spare. They now have an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five ODI series.

Sri Lanka are indeed pumped up as they had earlier won the Test series 2-0, and now have an unbeatable lead  of 3-0 in the five match ODI series.

Mahila Jayawardene was named the Man of the match.
