Twenty-six years ago, on the night of 2-3 Dec 1884, 20,000 people were killed in leakage of methyl isocynate gas from the Union Carbide Company Ltd. in Bhopal, which is the largest known industrial catastrophie. Known as UCIL (pesticide plant) it was a subsidiary of Union Carbide Company which is now owned by Dow Chemical Company.

The tragedy  has since been called as Bhopal Gas Tragedy. On 7th June, 2010, the Court verdict awarded the seven senior Indian officials accused, found guilty of the criminal negligence,  a jail term of two years, since that  was the maximum punishment prescribed under this section. They were allowed to be released on bail of $5000 each.
 
Soft punishment at the hands of the law has angered the effected massses and they are  now crying foul. (more…)

INDIA LIFT ASIA CUP

A 15-year title-drought came to an end as India, who displayed a clinical and magnificent performance, won the Asia Cup tournament after crushing defending champions Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the Asia Cup final on Thursday. 

Captain M.S.Dhoni elected to bat first after winning the toss,  India posted a fighting total of 268 for six. They then skittled out the Sri Lankan’s for only 187 in 44.4 overs. India displayed a scintillating performance in all departments of the game and won the Trophy at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Thursday.  (more…)

PAKISTAN OUT OF ASIA CUP

Harbhajan’s  shot over the midwicket fence helped India over-haul Pakistan’s score of 267 runs  in a thrilling encounter at the Rangiri stadium in Dambulla on Saturday in the 4th ODI of the Asia Cup.

Harbhajan Singh smashed the penultimate ball from Mohammad Aamer for a six as India knocked Pakistan out of the Asia Cup with a three-wicket win on Saturday. He scored an unbeaten 15 runs off 11 balls and received the prize of the Lord of the Match.

Both India and  Sri Lanka are into the final which will be played on June 24  and the last two league matches are inconsequential.

Opener Gautam Gambhir hit 83 off 97 balls and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni chipped in with 57 during a third-wicket stand of 97 which lifted India to 180-2 in the 36th over.

But Gambhir’s dismissal at that stage, bowled by Saeed Ajmal, brought a middle-order collapse which saw four wickets fall for the addition of 39 runs only. (more…)

Arrest of suspect by Victorian police in relation to death of an Indian national 

The Ministry of External Affairs New Delhi has stated that a teen has been arrested in the murder of Nitin Garg, 21, who was stabbed on the night of January 2 in Melbourne.

A 21 year old Indian national Nitin Garg, was found dead in West Footscray, Melbourne on 2nd January 2010.

The Victorian State Government authorities have informed the Consulate General of India, Melbourne that a 15 year old boy was arrested today, by the Victorian Police, in relation to the death of the late Nitin Garg. He is expected to be charged with one count of murder and would be produced in the Children’s Court today. (more…)

HINDI SERIALS ON TV

Life had become too monotonous. The daily routine, home to office and then back home, was totally bereft of any enjoyment worth the name.  Wake up, get ready and drive to office, through the chaotic traffic.

Though the drive became a bit enjoyable because of the greenery all round and the lovely view of the mountains beyond, but there was no enjoyment after hard days toil at office. 

Then one day I retired and had to sit at home. Now what?  Fetch the milk, wait for the newspaper, pay the telephone and electricity bills and pay the maid. That was all, what was left of ‘life’. Or sit down on the bench in the park, waiting for someone to come and talk to you? (more…)

It’s another morning and I have to go to the office as usual.  But why didn’t she give me my morning cuppa tea? 

Yes, today’s paper is right here but who opened the obituary columns on page 8? 

What the hell, this is my picture in the Obituary column. But what is my photo doing here, I am alive and I called my wife. 

Nobody listened. Nobody came. What the hell’s going on? 

Where is my mobile, I will give her a call. I remembered, it was kept in the next room.  (more…)
