IPL – AUCTION

January 13th, 2011 by Ravi Matah | Posted in Sports   Comments Off on IPL – AUCTION

The Indian Premium League auction has shown that the franchises have opted for youth over experience while buying players for their respective teams.  Yes, the big guns of yester-years had no takers and the lesser known players have been bought for huge sums.

Gautam Gambhir is the highest paid at $2.4 million. Yusaf Pathan, Robin Uthappa, Rohit Sharma,  Saurabh Tewary and Yuvraj Singh have also seen an upward revision of their purse at the IPL door. As per IPL laws, only four foreign players are allowed in the playing eleven and the rest have to be Indians, as such the franchises need at least 70 Indian players who have an impact on Cricket. The franchises are, therefore, willing to shell out large sums of money to get the best out of the lot available.

Irfan Pathan, though side-lined earlier from India Test and ODI XI because of his inability to bowl consistently, has been bought for an exorbitant price of $1.9 million. (more…)

IPL-3 : CHENNAI ENTER FINAL

April 23rd, 2010 by Ravi Matah | Posted in Sports   Comments Off on IPL-3 : CHENNAI ENTER FINAL

Deccan Chargers had won the last five encounters consecutively and the law of averages finally caught up with them. A fine bowling display by Doug Bollinger enabled Chennai to enter the final of the IPL-3.

MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat on Thursday in the Second Semi final between Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers played at the Dr. D.Y.Patil Stadium Mumbai. Dhoni had judged that the pitch would help the pacers now, and would take spin later. But his gamble did not initially work out as his batsmen failed to deliver the goods one after another and went back to the pavilion in quick succession.

Mathew Hayden and Murli Vijai opened the innings for Chennai and three regulation catches were dropped in the first five overs. Despite this lapse on the apart of Deccan, Chennai were a pathetic 50 for 3 after 8 and and at the half way mark were at 62 for the loss of 3 wickets. (more…)

IPL-3 : DECCAN BEAT DELHI

Deccan Chargers defended the lowest total chase and beat Delhi Daredevils by 11 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, Delhi on Sunday. Batting first, Deccan Chargers scored 145 for 7 wickets and they got them in 134 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. Deccan Chargers won the toss and chose to bat.

Deccan Chargers have won all of their last five encounters on the trot. The famous dictum that catches win matches, was amply evident in today’s match.

Andrew Symonds was the only Delhi batsman who offered some resistance for Deccan Chargers against Delhi Daredevils.  Deccan were shaky at the start before the Symonds slow and cautious approach to the game saw Delhi  reach 145 for 7. (more…)

DECCAN BT DELHI – IPL-3

March 21st, 2010 by Ravi Matah | Posted in Sports   Comments Off on DECCAN BT DELHI – IPL-3

Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to bat first. They managed to put on a fighting score of 171 for 6 wickets on board in the allotted 20 overs. David Warner’s half-century and captain Dinesh Karthik’s fighting 46 were not enough as Delhi Daredevils threw away a sure-shot victory to go down by 10 runs to Deccan Chargers at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday.

Delhi appeared to be on the victory track but the departure of  Dinesh Kartik (c&b by Symonds) destroyed their hopes and thereafter Delhi’s wickets fell like nine pins. Symonds starred for the Chargers with both bat and ball, picking up three wickets for 21 runs from his four overs after scoring 35. (more…)

DECCAN CHARGERS BT KINGS XI PB

March 20th, 2010 by Ravi Matah | Posted in Sports   Comments Off on DECCAN CHARGERS BT KINGS XI PB

Kings XI Punjab won the toss and put Deccan Chargers in to bat. Deccan Chargers scored 170 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs in the IPL-3 match played at the Sabarmati Stadium Cuttack, on Friday. Symonds 53, Gilchrist 33, Gibbs 23 and Suman 26 were the main contributors  and this score was barely sufficient in the end to beat Kings XI Punjab by six runs. Kings XI Punjab had almost clinched the match because of the heroics of Irfan Pathan who unfortunately got out in the last over.

When Deccan Chargers were batting, they found lots of problems against the spin attack of Kings XI Punjab but were felt  totally at home against the pace of the likes of Sresaanth and after considerable struggle they managed to reach a competitive score of 170 runs in the first IPL game to be held in Cuttack.
