Hero Honda World Cup Hockey

Less than a week ago, the spectators in the Capt. Roop Singh Stadium at Gwalior were shouting Sachin, Sachin, at the top of their voices who went on to score the only double ton in an ODI which ia a world record.  At the Major Dhyan Singh stadium, New Delhi on sunday night, the spectators were chanting  Sandeep Singh, Sandeep Singh all the way who scored two goals in the 35th and 57th minute. India hammered Pakistan 4-1 in their first encounter in the Pool B match of Hero Honda  World Cup. The players and the support staff got a purse of Rs. One Lakh for their magnificient effort.

Both India and Pakistan got 5 penalty corners each and India converted two of those while Pakistan could convert only one. Sohail Abbas scored the lone goal for Pakistan. Abbas found the upper bar of the goal post twice which was a sheer stroke of good luck for India. With this victory India have avenged their last defeat at the hands of Pakistan in Argentina. Pakistan’s goal keeper Salman Akbar save at least two sure shot goals for Pakistan otherwiise the margin would have been greater.

In the first half of the game Pakistan players were always seen defending their own half side and goal and could not get a chance to go beyond the centre line towards the Indian goal.

India’s constant pressure eventually resulted in the first goal of the match through hardworking Shivendra, who scored from a rebound after Sandeep’s grounded flick was saved by Akbar off the hosts’ second penalty corner in the 25th minute. Comparatively, India took major use of the outside-right plank more than the left-side while making in-roads into the Pakistan territory. And then they doubled the lead a few seconds before the half-time when Sandeep’s shot sounded the wooden board after they had earned their third penalty corner, and the crowd erupted with joy. At half ime India was up 2-0.

India made it 3-0 within two minutes into the second half when Prabhjot Singh scored a field goal. Sandeep registered his second goal of the day, again converting a short corner in the 57th minute. Pakistan got the consolation prize two minutes later when Abbas became third time lucky, converting his side’s fourth penalty corner.

The hockey team gave a superb Holi gift to the country by a victory in their first ecounter in the World cup.

India will now face Australia, who lost 2-3 at the hands of England earlier in the day, on Tuesday while Pakistan will take on Spain.
