Kings XI Punjab made a sensational fightback before clinching a dramatic victory over Chennai Super Kings via one-over eliminator in an I.P. L. match at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Chennai SuperKings won the toss and elected to field first on Sunday. Kings XI Punjab did not score well to the expectations of the viewers and were apparently in dire straits right from the word go. Muttiah Muralitharan bowled exceptionally well and took three important wickets resulting in another meagre total from Kings XI Punjab.

Irfan Pathan, promoted to open the innings, and Yuvraj Singh would have felt that the entire teams burden rests on them alone. They were not supported by any other batsman from their team. Irfan scored 39 but Ravi Bopara made a quick exit after scoring 1 run. Other contributors for Kings XI Punjab score were Yuvraj 43, Sangakara 15 and Mohammed Kaif 14 runs.

Yuvraj hit four fours and two sixes, but Mohammad Kaif and Manvinder Bisla at the other end could not provide him adequate support.  Punjab could not make it a competitive total when Yuvraj fell in the 19th over, caught at long on by sub fielder, bowled by Morkel.

Wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel struck a fighting 57 to take CSK to almost to a winning position only to see his team-mates throw away the game.

Needing 12 runs from two overs and five wickets down, Manpreet Gony was bowled by Juan Theron in the penultimate over CSK needed 10 from the last over.

A four by Albie Morkel from the first ball of the final over bowled by Irfan Pathan tilted the scale in favour of CSK and the score was tied in 19.4 overs.   Aswin could not score from the penultimate ball of the innings and  was caught by  Kaif off the last ball.    Theron was the most successful Kings XI bowler with 2/17.

In reply to the Kings XI Punjab total of 136 for 8, Chennai Super Kings also scored 136 for 7 and it was a tie, the first tie of the IPL-3 which resulted in the super over being brought into play.

In the super over bowl out, CSK made nine runs off the bowling of Juan Theron by losing two of their three nominated batsmen -Matthew Hayden (0) and Captain Suresh Raina (8) — while Albie Morkel made one. It was a thrilling encounter in which, Mohali beat Chennai with two balls to spare in the super over.

Mohali started their batting brilliantly with a six off the world’s best spinner, only to suffer a setback with a wicket the next ball. It was then Yuvraj kept his cool and executed a perfect reverse sweep to guide his team to their first victory.

With the win, Kings XI Punjab punctuated their losing streak and bagged two points from four matches.

Yuvraj Singh bagged the award for the maximum sixes in the match.

Juan Theron was named Man of the Match.
