The semi-final match between Pakistan and Australia was the “Match of the tournament’. An unbelievable run-chase which sent Pakistan players for the leather hunt.Australia proved on Friday that they are true champions. They were almost down and out after the 10th over of their innings and the world knew that Pakistan is through to the finals, except one man – David Hussey who had thought otherwise. Australia won the toss and elected to field at the St. Lucia Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Mike Hussey

Australia were mostly out of it when Cameron White walked in. He slammed 43 0ff 31 balls with 5 sixes, but at the fall of his wicket, there was a gloom in the Australian dug-out.

Five sixes in five overs from White had come from the 11th onwards, but Pakistan’s spinners still kept a lid on things and when Saeed Ajmal bowled a five-run 14th, it seemed a crucial one. Australia still needed 70 from five and when White fell, it seemed over. But Hussey had settled and pulled Afridi for a couple of sixes, and the onslaught began.

The dictum that ‘a match is not over till the last ball is bowled’ was amply evident in this match. Hussey came to the crease in the 13th over when Australia had already lost five top wickets for 105 runs in the 13th over. They had got their 100 in 12.1 overs. He scored 60 not out punctuated with 3 boundaries and 6 sixes raining all over the groound. In the last ten balls he managed to score 38 runs, and a victory in this match was an impossible task for any team playing inside a pressure-cooker situation.

With M. Hussey in a punishing mood, 38 runs were required off the last two overs and Afridi and company were even then sure that they had this match in their kitty. They converted one’s into two’s and hit boundaries through gaps in the 19th over. Then scores were level and only one run was required off the last two balls of the innings, when Hussey pulled it off for a six in which the ball went into the stadium. In all Australia hit 14 sixes.

Pakistan were in shocked disbelief having lost a match, which, after scoring 191 for 6, batting first, they had thought they would surely win. Kamraan Akmal hit a half-century with six boundaries and three sixes. Salman Butt was out after scoring 32 off 30 balls including four booundaries. The opening stand contributed 82 runs when Johnson claimed Kamraan Akmal.

Umer Akmal also contributed 56 runs with the help of four towering sixes, but Shahid Afridi was out cheaply after scoring just 6 runs. Pakistan had managed to score 100 in 12.2 overs but they kept pumping runs till the end and Johnson was hit for three sixes in the 18th over. With the sore board reading at 191 for 6, Pakistan were hopeful that they will pull off this match but fate had willed otherwise.

After the match, even the Australians were shocked in disbelief over the  remarkable feat they had achieved.

MK Hussey was declared the Man of the match.
