M.S.Dhoni won the toss for Chennai Super Kings and opted to bat against Royal Challangers Bangalore at the jam-packed M.A.Chidambaram Stadium in the final of the IPL 4 match played here on Saturday. Murli Vijay and Mike Hussey opened the innings for CSK and had saved their best Cricket for the last game. They posted the finest opening partnership of 159 runs for the IPL, which enabled CSK to post a huge total of 205 runs.

Vijay and Hussey hit sparkling half centuries en-route to the 159-run opening stand and gave Chennai a quick start which laid the foundation of the mammoth score of 205. 

CSK had reached their 50 in 5.1 overs with a six from Murli and the score-board later went on to read hundred in just 10.3 overs. The 159-run opening partnership was broken when Hussey played a lofted shot off Syed Mohammad over long-on and was caught by Mithun. 

Dhoni scored 22 runs and then lit up Chepauk with his two sixes but he and Vijay fell to S Aravind in consecutive deliveries. Vijay 95, fell just five runs short of his century while Dhoni departed in quest of quick runs. Vijay stroked four boundaries and six towering sixes in his 52-ball knock.

For RCB, Aravind and Gayle picked two wickets apiece while Syed picked one. Bravo then hit a six off the last ball to take the total to 205 runs. (more…)

Johannesburg:  The Warriors were confident of posting a big score after having won the toss at the Wanderers and had posted 45 runs in the sixth over when R Ashwin got Jacobs out lbw while he attempted a reverse sweep and that wicket at that stage cost Warriors the match. Davy Jacobs was going great guns till then and his team was sighting a total of 170 – 180 runs. But the collapse was soon to follow and they could manage only 128 for 7 wickets in the 20 overs.

Jacobs took the attack straight away to the opposition, hitting two boundaries off Doug Bollinger in the very first over. The Warriors’ skipper followed it up with a cover drive in the next over of Albie Morkel.

After Jacobs fell, Muttiah Muralitharan throttled the Warriors with his skill, and L Balaji maintained the pressure with a disciplined spell in the middle, keeping the Warriors to 128, which was never going to be enough. And it wasn’t. This is the last time this group of players will turn out for Chennai, and they gave themselves a nice farewell present.

The frequent fall of wickets, after the prized scalp of skipper Davy Jacobs, at regular intervals, derailed the once steady-looking Warriors’ innings as the home side struggled to put up a challenging total in the final. (more…)

M.S.Dhoni’s shrewd captaincy and clinical approach assured Chennai Super Kings the victory against the formidable Mumbai Indians  in the final of the IPL-3 tournament.

The closing ceremony delayed the toss by more than half an hour at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.   It was MS Dhoni, who won the toss and chose to bat on Sunday. Both the sides played the same XIs that won them the semi-finals. 

Raina’s 57 not out took Chennai Super Kings to a respectable and fighting total of 168 for 5 in the final of IPL-3 played Sunday at the D Y Patil Stadium Mumbai. Sachin, who was doubtful to play because of the stitches in his hand, came down to the toss for the match and the packed Stadium went ecstatic.  (more…)

Deccan Chargers had won the last five encounters consecutively and the law of averages finally caught up with them. A fine bowling display by Doug Bollinger enabled Chennai to enter the final of the IPL-3.

MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat on Thursday in the Second Semi final between Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers played at the Dr. D.Y.Patil Stadium Mumbai. Dhoni had judged that the pitch would help the pacers now, and would take spin later. But his gamble did not initially work out as his batsmen failed to deliver the goods one after another and went back to the pavilion in quick succession. 

Mathew Hayden and Murli Vijai opened the innings for Chennai and three regulation catches were dropped in the first five overs. Despite this lapse on the apart of Deccan, Chennai were a pathetic 50 for 3 after 8 and and at the half way mark were at 62 for the loss of 3 wickets. (more…)

M.S.Dhoni slammed 54 (not out) which enabled Chennai Super Kings to beat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets in a nail-biting finish. Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to field at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala on Sunday. Battiing first, Kings XI Punjab opened the innings with Jayawardane and Marsh. Jayawardane was out for 21   runs at the score of 34 for 1. He had hit 2 fours and two sixes.

Sangakara came in to bat and joined Marsh at the crease. Together they took the score to 90 for 2.  Sangakara was out after scoring 33 runs off 24 balls which included 5 shots to the fence. Yuvraj did not last long and was lbw bowled Raina for 1 run.

Shaun Marsh and Irfan Pathan played some incredible shots and took the score to 192 for 2. Marsh scored 88 runs which included 8 fours and 5 sixes and his bravado was a treat to watch. Irfan Pathan gave him adequate support at the other end and scored 44 runs punctualted 4 fours and a six. They added 99 runs for the fourth wicket off only 48 balls. (more…)

IPL-3 : DELHI BEAT CHENNAI

Chennai Super Kings won the toss at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium Chennai and opted to bat against the Delhi Daredevils. Dhoni must still be wondering whether he had taken the right decision. It was an absolute dismal batting performance by Chennai who lost wickets at regular intervals. At one stage Chennai were 23 for 3 and at the ten over half mark they were 55 for 6.

Badrinath scored 30 runs with the help of 2 fours and helped Chennai cross the hundred run mark.

Daredevils produced a disciplined bowling and fielding performance to restrict Chennai to 112 for 9. Though Badrinath contributed 30 valuable runs for his team other batsmen could not do justice and Vijai scored 17, Raina 15 and Hussey also contributed 15 runs. Doug Bollinger scored 16 runs and the only six of the match was also scored by him. (more…)

Kolkatta Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bat at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadiium Chennai on Tuesday. Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkatta Knight Riders by nine wickets thanks to the superb bowling performance by R Ashwin who had taken the new ball and wrecked the top batting order of Kolkatta Knight Riders. Ashwin led the attack and took 2 wickets in an over and Kolkatta were wrapped up for 139 for 8 in the alotted 20 overs. 

Chennai Super Kings are a confident lot and are in the hunt for a semi-final place. They beat Kolkatta with more than six overs to spare. Kolkatta were 11 for no loss when Gayle was stumped in trying to loft a six. McCullum was later caught at fine leg off . 

Kolkatta were 17 for 3 and within moments became 19 for 4. Hussey went forward to play Ashwin and Dhoni did the rest in a flash of a second. Hussey could not get his back foot in time inside the crease.  (more…)

Suresh Raina’s half-century goes in vain as Deccan Chargers beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets. This victory was carved out by the Deccan bowlers who had restricted the Chennai team to just 138 runs

M.S.Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat at the Vidharba Cricket Association Stadium at Nagpur on Saturday. It was a tremendously hot afternoon where the temperature hovered around 41*C. Mathew Hayden and Murli Vijai opened the innings for Chennai and took the score to 41 when Hayden was caught by Gilchrist bowled Harmeet for 19 runs. (more…)

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium Chennai on Tuesday. Hayden and Murli Vijai opened the innings and Vijai was bowled by Harbhajan Singh. Mathew Hayden was expected to lead the fireworks but he could not found the boundries repeatedly and was going on with one’s and two’s. However, the runs came  in the fifth over, when Hayden hit  Bravo for ten runs. He later perished after scoring 35 runs. 

Their 50 came in 6.5 overs and  Chennai Super Kings were 53 for 1. Raina played some cuts through the slip cordon but the Mumbai fielding was spot on. Raina hit the first six of the innings but later his possible were converted into singles due to good fielding. He tried another lofted shot but was caught by Dhawan b Bravo and it was 69 – 2.  (more…)
